Last Saturday, my dance crew Freeplay had the honor of performing along with dozens of other awesome dance groups for a benefit for lupus research called "Dance for Another Day." We danced in a beautiful theater, the Malonga Caquelourd Center for the Arts in downtown Oakland for an appreciative audience who were there to support the cause and cheer on all of the different dance acts.
We did a variation on a piece we did at "The Ella Effect" a couple of weeks ago, a modern and moody take on "Girl from Ipanema" that we call "#ipanema." One of the most fun parts of doing this piece was wearing these custom masks created by our member Charlie that you can see above.
The only bad part about being in huge productions like this is that you don't actually get to enjoy the other pieces being put on by awesome dancers like P.O.P., The Sarah Bush Dance Project, Janey Madamba and the Gnosis Project. Luckily there will be video of the whole thing that we'll get to see later!
It's great getting to do what you love for a worthwhile mission. While wearing a fun mask.
