The Chinese bakery Sheng Kee (WARNING: link auto-plays lame jingle) sells lots of odd and tasty baked goods. But my favorite by far is the almond croissant stuffed with green tea mochi.
I mean just look at it.
Is there a better culinary metaphor for America than the almond croissant stuffed with green tea mochi? Only in America would we take things that are perfectly good and delicious on their own — croissants, mochi, green tea — and then smash them together into something sublime. All it needs is perhaps a dusting of cayenne pepper or candied goji berries on top, and we've got most of the world in a pastry.
Also, it's tastier and cheaper than the cronut.
Sells for about $1.85 at Sheng Kee. Locations all around San Francisco.
