Nexeus Fatale was kind enough to invite me to the Virtualive mixed-reality concert tonight at the Canal Room in Tribeca. I ran into a bunch of cool SL people there including Frans Charming, Rhiannon Chatnoir, Hiro Pendragon, and Will Ward. I could only stay for the opening act, Shock Radar, who rocked the house while their concert was streamed into the Morpheum sim in SL.
I have to say it was a bit distracting seeing the avatars dance on the plasma screen monitors while also attending to the flesh-and-blood musicians playing their hearts out onstage. I’m not sure it added to the experience in real life, and perhaps even made it harder to appreciate the music. I’ll have to think about how a projection of an SL environment into a real world space could be done in a way that enhanced the experience for the RW audience.
Anyway, it certainly was an interesting experiment in mixed-reality musical performance. Kudos to Adam Broitman and his crew, and the bands Buddahead and Shock Radar, for trying this out.
