I have been playing around with the Democracy Player, a nice little program that aggregates various online videos into “channels” that you can easily surf through, view and subscribe to.
They bill themselves as “a new kind of browser for watching videos– grab webpages with video and video RSS feeds (including podcasts, video blogs, and BitTorrent feeds), and watch them full screen, one after the other. It’s free and open source.” With over 300 “channels,” the Democracy Player includes content on subjects from education to animation, art, vlogs, music and food.
Right now I’m subscribed to “The Angry Chef,” “Ask the Techies,” and “Clear Soul Live.” I’ve already watched a music video by a cool techno group called LFO and archival footage of Django Reinhart jamming with Stephane Grapelli. Totally awesome, and normally really hard to find.
Sponsored by a group called the Participatory Culture Foundation out of Worchester, MA, the Democracy Player is just one part of their larger mission to “build an open and democratic television platform.”
I’m not throwing my TV out the window yet. But the Democracy Player gets us a bit closer to opening up video content outside of the traditional corporate entertainment industry.
