As an older dancer, the loss of flexibility, strength, and stamina compared to my younger years looms larger and larger. It’s not fun to feel your own limits. BUT… there’s a lot I can still do to bring energy to the scene.
I ‘ve been thinking this morning about the role of the hype man / woman. You know who that is. The person who sees you stick a move and goes “Oh HEY!” or “Let’s GO!” or just points and nods at you. That takes like zero effort, and yet for someone who is trying to land something can mean the world to them.
That is something I can keep doing FOREVER. I remember some older lindy hoppers from back in the Irving Plaza days who would be the hype men and women for newer dancers. There was this older Black gentleman who would see a couple do something dope and he would say “Yes! Do it again! Do it again!”
Kenny Hoff does this a lot when he films skaters. It’s the best.
Who feels me?
