Performing the “Skate Sham” with the Savoy Rollers

This past weekend, I had the extreme pleasure of performing a piece for the annual Skate Showcase we call “the Skate Sham.” Created with my Savoy Rollers crew, we wanted to share with the larger skate community our passion for lindy hop and our newfound love of skate dancing. So doing a skate version of the classic tap / lindy hop routine the Shim Sham seemed very fitting.

The Skate Showcase is a yearly celebration of skate culture featuring a series of different skate performances and acts, some by individuals others by groups. It was neat to get to perform with local skate legend Beto Lopez and many groups of OG skaters sharing different line dances and choreographies, some of which go way back.

And then to have folks from our local lindy hop community come by and support was just so so special. My favorite part was getting to invite them to do the Shim Sham with us in true “flash mob” fashion. Just like we used to do.

Big ups to my friends who helped me to figure out the choreography and organization of this routine. Doing some of those steps on skates is not easy!

I actually got to participate in another piece at the Skate Showcase, a called line dance called “Simon Says” that Les Farias, Jr. led. So much fun to do!

This marks about a year since I first took up skating in July 2020. This feels so right to get to share all that I’ve accomplished and connect my communities together. It’s pretty damn satisfying.
