I just got another email (see below) purporting to be from a United Nations source, this one supposedly from Carol Bellamy, “an executive director of UNICEF.” The email asks people to nominate themselves to attend a youth conference in The Netherlands and South Africa. No dates, no website, no details on the agenda or purpose. All the email tells you is that (1) the conference is free, (2) participants will be fully funded to travel to the conference and (3) will receive visas to travel.
The best part is that the conference is sponsored by “UNICEF, USAID, WHO, UNESCO, the United Nations Security Council and First Ladies of Presidents of United Nations.” Wow, that’s an impressive list of sponsors, particularly since the UN has no president and thus no “First Ladies of Presidents.”
And about Carol Bellamy. She was executive director of UNICEF from 1995-2005. The current executive director is Ann M. Veneman. Ms. Bellamy certainly was not also a “youth director” nor “U.N.H.C.R. staff” (UN High Commissioner for Refugees) nor World Vision director to Canada.
Again, what’s the scam? It’s a puzzlement. I’ll apply to attend and let you know.

It is very strange.
I googled teh two names in the email and without digging further it does throw up a lot of officla information.
I do think that it strange for Carol to have a Yahoo email address. It was also strange that the Global Youth Alert rep is advertising his mobile number.
I hope that someone can get to the bottom of all this.

My guess is that this is just used for email harvesting for spam sending companies. But the conspiracy theorist in me wonders if something more insidious is being perpetrated…

i apply to the head office, they said,they will provide air ticket and visa, but i should book my hotel reservation at south Africa. With the sum of $250 and i should come with Four people from my country. my doubt is that i dont know how this may be true.please i will like to obtain more info, and advise from u people in regards to this offer.

i have received this hoax email, sent a reply, and when googling these supposed ppl to check this out, i realised it was a scam! so, i am officially one of the ppl that have been duped. this needs serious investigation as these ppl’s names are being slandered and it is giving false hope to many who actually do care about these initiatives.

I received this e-mail from Carol Brown just today: June 16, 2006. I really found it weird for someone to just invite me for free to some youth conference. I decided then to try to find out if it was a spam by surfing the web. Luckily, I found this website where many people have received this same e-mail. Still, I believe this thing is very weird. Someone should try to find out what it is all about.
I have been duped as well.I called the US embassy after i googled the training agency and the United States Center for development and found nothing.What we should not ignore is Identity fraud. I sent in all my certificates (certified copies) as well as a certified copy of my identity document!!!! Aside from the fact i feel like a complete idiot i came very close to resigning from my present job and taking a months unpaid leave to get things sorted out to attend the fictious training course.
On alighter note i invited over all my family to for dinner to celebrate!!!!

I received a letter also from someone named Mr Peter Libel from Botswana living in England. The letter says esentually the same thing but names Nigeria and the US as countries…In my mind, I think that this is another scam that will enventually ask you to send money.
