Grace Cathedral is one of the finest houses of worship in San Francisco. It’s also home to, not one, but two beautiful labyrinths. I had the opportunity to walk both this week, and can highly recommend the experience.
The most obvious labyrinth is right as you enter the cathedral. It takes up the large open area right past the front entrance. While I have been there several times, I had never noticed it before.
It’s quite large. It took me about twenty minutes to make my way to the center and back, at my normal meditative walk pace.
Less obvious is the labyrinth on the outside of the cathedral. As you face the front of the church, it’s in an elevated alcove to your right.
This one is almost identical to the one inside the church, based on the same historical pattern I believe.

This was also the first time I’ve walked a labyrinth with other people. It’s definitely a different experience with other people walking the path with you. Every once in awhile you have to negotiate right of way when you meet someone going the other way — typically both of you trying to give way to the other person! But otherwise, it does make it more meaningful being with other folks on this mini-pilgrimage.
