Somewhat hidden past the entrance to the California Pacific Medical Center lives a lovely outdoor labyrinth. Set back from the street and away from the entrance, the labyrinth is well situated for an undisturbed meditative walk.
The pattern is similar, possibly identical, to the one used at the Grace Cathedral. I guess it’s a popular one! The labyrinth is mostly shaded, which is nice on a warm day.

It has a large sign with information on how to best enjoy it.
The labyrinth is a universal image representing the path of life. It is a symbolic journey in the form of a walking meditation. Walking the labyrinth path is a healing ritual that can provide insight. courage and understanding in facing life’s challenges.
Our labyrinth garden is a place for patients. families and friends. hospital staff and members of the community to come and explore the inner journey to health and wholeness. We offer this healing tool as part of our effort to support the physical, emotional and spiritual health and well-being of our community.
There are three stages to the labyrinth walk:
Releasing
Quieting the mind and letting go of the details of daily life as you walk.
Illumination
Opening to insight and new awareness when you reach the center.
Integration
Moving outward from the center, taking the silence, peace and insight out with you into your day.
How to walk the labyrinth:
- Clear your mind and become aware of your breathing.
- Allow yourself to find your own pace.
- Unlike a maze, the labyrinth has only one path which leads to the center and out again. depending on your pace. you may wish to pass. or be passed by others.
- Those going in will meet those coming out.
- Do whatever feels natural.
