More UN spam… I mean World Vision Intl Spam

Posted on April 25, 2006 by

Unspam_2Finally, I just received some spam from an international organization that isn’t the United Nations. This time around, it’s from, apparently World Vision International.  WVI is :

a Christian relief and development organisation working for the well being of all people, especially children. Through emergency relief, education, health care, economic development and promotion of justice, World Vision helps communities help themselves. Working on six continents, World Vision is one of the largest Christian relief and development organisations in the world.

So, pretty nice folk.  Which makes me pretty steamed that someone would pretend to be them in order to, well, do something.

I won’t reproduce the full text of the spam email here, but you can read it all here.  Basically its the same text as the "US Committee for the UN" and "UN Agency for Sustainable Growth".  Even the fax number is the same area code, 206, which is apparently in Washington State somewhere.

The real World Vision has issued a spam allert on their website which explains what the whole scam is:

World Vision would like to inform applicants about individuals who are fraudulently claiming to be recruiters for World Vision, but are in no way affiliated with World Vision. These scam artists advertise high-paying jobs with World Vision that do not exist. “Successful” candidates are instructed to wire a “training” or “recruitment” fee, to an overseas bank account.

If you have received any of these fraudulent offers or advertisements, or if you are unsure about an offer of employment, please forward them to World Vision at emp_fraud@wvi.org. If you are in the U.S. and have received any of these recruitment emails or have otherwise been a victim of this scam, you can help World Vision by filing a report of the incident on the FBI’s Internet Fraud Complaint Center website at www.ic3.gov.

I’m off to do just that.
