The Tech Museum announces winners of virtual exhibit competition this Thursday

Posted on April 9, 2008 by

I got the exciting news from the San Jose Tech Museum of Innovation about a virtual awards ceremony for the winners of their exhibit design contest held in their Second Life virtual museum (click here to teleport). This Thursday, April 10, starting at 10AM PST, the Tech will be announcing the winners of the virtual exhibit creation contest as well as the
winners of the special “Best Of” US$1,000 cash prizes for best-in-SL,
most educational, best collaboration, and best overall virtual exhibits.

Viziclone_003As I’ve posted previously, I’ve been incredibly impressed with how The Tech has developed this virtual exhibit project, which leverages the strengths of both the virtual world for 3D modelling and group collaboration, as well as the web for matchmaking and team-building on their website www.thetechvirtual.org.

And the exhibits themselves are totally awesome, which you can see in their Parkside Hall.  Definitely worth a visit!

WHAT:             JOIN US FOR THE TECH IN SECOND LIFE AWARDS CEREMONY!

The Tech Museum of Innovation (The Tech), one of the nation’s premier science and technology museums continues to showcase the convergence of technology and art in the virtual world with The Tech in Second Life®, also known as The Tech Virtual. On Thursday, April 10, The Tech invites you to participate in its virtual awards ceremony. The Tech is announcing the winners of the virtual exhibit creation contest as well as the winners of the special “Best Of” $1,000 cash prizes for best-in-SL, most educational, best collaboration, and best overall virtual exhibits.

The Tech Virtual encompasses a replica of The Tech’s San Jose facility in Second Life, including a creative common area where people can work together on exhibit concepts (called Parkside Hall); and a collaboration Web site called The Tech Virtual Museum Exhibit Workshop (www.thetechvirtual.org), designed to facilitate projects and community connections.

The winning exhibits were selected by The Tech and a jury of international curators, exhibit designers, scientists and experts.

The Tech’s use of Second Life’s platform to build, test and launch new exhibition content serves as a model and a hands-on opportunity for other museums interested in experimenting with new methods for creating content and is open to everyone. The Tech Virtual will continue beyond this challenge as a thriving community with new challenges to be announced soon.

To join The Tech Virtual community or to find out more about this initiative, please visit http://www.thetechvirtual.org/. Sign in online to browse, join and create exhibit projects, or visit The Tech island in Second Life to watch and participate in the ceremony on April 10.

WHEN:             Thursday, April 10
10:00-11:00 a.m. PDT
WHERE:           Log in to Second Life and navigate to The Tech island (click here to teleport).

Lying disguises our mortality, our inadequacies, our fears and anxieties, our loneliness in the midst of the crowd. We yearn for the comfort of familiar lies to create a more amenable reality. What do you think?
